Advocacy and Policy

Learn more about Health Care Reform
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act—health system reform legislation signed into law by President Obama on March 23—contains a number of key provisions for you and your patients. Some provisions may have an immediate impact on your practice and patients, while others will not take effect for some time.
Given the new direction for the nation's health system, the AMA has developed Health System Reform Insight to help you understand the new law and how it will affect you, when certain provisions are scheduled to take effect, how you can be ready when the regulations go into effect and what your patients need to know. Please use the links below to learn more.

AMA-MSS Advocacy
The AMA is aggressively involved in advocacy efforts related to the most vital issues in medicine today, including medical liability reform, Medicare physician payment reform, expanding coverage for the uninsured and increasing access to care, improving the public health, managed care reform, and others. AMA-MSS Policy
The AMA-MSS Assembly is the policy-making body of the Medical Student Section. Policies adopted by the Assembly provide a framework for the priorities and activities of the Section. Although often complimentary, MSS policies are distinct from the official policies of the American Medical Association, which are set by the AMA House of Delegates. Writing a Resolution
Writing a resolution can be an excellent way to accomplish a wide range of goals, from asking the AMA-MSS or AMA to support a broad idea to asking the AMA-MSS or AMA to take a specific action. However, writing a resolution is not always the most effective way to accomplish your goal. Before writing your resolution, please take a few minutes to learn more about some resolution alternatives that might better address your ultimate goal.
